Super-Hatred
Oh the “Super team”, how we love to hate them, how we take pleasure in seeing them lose. The newest installment of the super team is the Golden State Warriors of Stephen Curry (Back to Back MVP), Klay Thompson (2 time all-star), Andre Iguodala (1 time all-star and 2015 NBA Finals MVP), Kevin Durant (2014 MVP), Draymond Green (2nd Team All-NBA), with role players like Shaun Livingston, Zaza Pachulia, and David West.
As soon as Durant announced his decision, the hate spread like wildfire. Kevin Durant is a coward, Kevin Durant is a sellout, and Kevin Durant is cheating. Those are just some of the things that have been said about KD. This brings me to a question, why do super teams get so much hate? The answer, fans root for teams to rise, and when they’re at the top, they love to knock them down.
The Warriors are one of the greatest examples of this. Everybody loved the Warriors when they rose to 67 wins and won the 2014-15 NBA Championship. Then in 2015-16, people hated on the Dubs, but not everyone. But now, as soon as they get Durant, all people want is for them to fail miserably. I don’t blame them. I live in Oakland and am a Warriors season ticket holder, and die-hard passionate fanatic so all of this hate is a lot to handle, but I was a super team hating culprit, as I hated the LeBron James-led Miami Heat.
But as I look over super teams over the years, I start to regret my hatred, as I realize that these teams (the 2010-14 Miami Heat, 2007-2012 Boston Celtics) were insanely exciting to watch, and brought an amazing intrigue to the league as that Celtics team in particular was one who revitalized basketball in one of it’s worst periods.
All in all, I get to go to about 30 Warriors games a year, and each one of those games is going to be like Christmas every day with this squad, and sure is going to be fun to watch.
